Rochester, NY – Police released body-worn camera footage showing two officers firing at a dog that attacked several people near Warwick Avenue on the city’s southwest side on Monday.

One person later had a small metal fragment removed from his leg, roughly an hour after the incident. Police Capt. Greg Bello said an internal investigation is underway to determine whether the fragment came from an officer’s bullet. He described it as about the size of a fingernail on a pinky.

Authorities said the dog became loose during a fight between two family members on Kirkland Road. Police reported the conflict began when 34-year-old David Singletary damaged a car in a driveway. They added that the resident came outside holding an unloaded shotgun after hearing the disturbance, and Singletary allegedly pointed a knife at him.

In bodycam footage from the first officer, he can be heard shouting, “where’s the gun,” while another voice responds, “the gun is right there on the floor.” As the officer approached, the dog ran toward him, and he fired two shots toward the ground. A slowed version of another officer’s camera showed bullets striking the sidewalk.

The dog then returned toward the confrontation before charging a second officer. That officer can be heard ordering people to comply, saying “show me your hands” and “get on the ground now,” before firing one shot at the animal. He continued instructing the individuals involved until they were both detained.

Police said the dog was not struck by gunfire during the incident.
