New York, New York – On January 27, 2026, the Coast Guard Cutter Hawser successfully broke through ice to free the NYPD Harbor David after the vessel became beset near Pier 86 on the Hudson River.
Working alongside local partners, Hawser ensured the NYPD vessel could safely reposition and continue its operations without incident.
The Hawser is a 65-foot Harbor Tug homeported in Bayonne, New Jersey. Its reinforced hull allows it to break ice and keep vital waterways open during the harsh Northeast winter.
Beyond icebreaking, the cutter supports search and rescue and law enforcement missions year-round, particularly on Lake Champlain and the Hudson River.
