Chinese Vessels Confronted As PCG And BFAR Shield Filipino Fishermen

Bajo De Masinloc, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) deployed vessels to protect Filipino fishermen following harassment by Chinese Coast Guard vessels last weekend. More than 20 Filipino fishing boats had been targeted.

Two PCG vessels and five fishery patrol boats were sent to the area to ensure the safety of the fishermen. Crews delivered essential support, including fuel subsidies, food packs, and ice, helping the fishermen continue operations despite rising fuel costs.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan directed a Maritime Domain Awareness flight over the area. The flight recorded six China Coast Guard vessels, 20 China Maritime Militia vessels, and one People’s Liberation Army Navy warship in the vicinity.

The operation also marked the first documented instance of a China Coast Guard vessel announcing via live radio its intention to conduct a clearing operation at specific coordinates spanning points A through D.

The PCG affirmed its commitment to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s pledge to defend Philippine sovereignty, maritime rights, and jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea. Officials emphasized that the Coast Guard will continue enforcing international law while protecting the rights, safety, and livelihoods of Filipino fishermen against external threats.
