China Coast Guard Members Strike Philippine Navy Sailor Near Ayungin Shoal

Ayungin Shoal, Philippines – A Philippine Navy sailor was injured during an incident involving China Coast Guard personnel near BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal.

The sailor was struck on the head with a baton while inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, according to the statement.

Ayungin Shoal lies within the Philippine EEZ, and the statement referenced the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2016 Arbitral Award regarding the Philippines’ rights in the area.
