Chicago River Turns Bright Green As Thousands Gather For 64th St Patrick’s Day Tradition

Chicago, United States – X user Lukasz Dusza documented an aerial view of the Chicago River in downtown Chicago under partly cloudy skies as a white tour boat moved slowly along the waterway between major landmarks including the Wrigley Building and Marina City.

As the vessel traveled through the river, bright green dye streamed from its sides, forming vivid emerald trails that gradually spread across the surface. The color slowly mixed with the murky brown water, transforming it into a uniform fluorescent green.

Large crowds of spectators lined bridges, sidewalks, and riverbanks throughout the downtown area. Many people were bundled in coats and hats while watching the transformation in near-freezing temperatures.

The event took place on March 14, 2026, during the city’s annual St Patrick’s Day celebration. Organized by the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130, the tradition began at 10 a.m. near Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive.

The 2026 celebration marked the 64th year of the event and attracted thousands of onlookers. Organizers used an eco-friendly vegetable-based powder to create the temporary color change, which can remain visible for several hours to days depending on weather conditions.
