Oulu, Finland – Bumble bees have been shown to complete problem-solving tasks using objects without prior training, according to new research.
The findings suggest that the insects can display flexible thinking when interacting with objects to reach a reward.
The original summary states: “A new study shows that bumble bees can position a ball underneath a fake ‘flower’ to reach a reward, suggesting that they might have the cognitive flexibility necessary to solve complex problems.”
In experiments conducted by Akshaye Bhambore and colleagues, bees were able to complete tasks involving positioning a ball beneath a fake flower to access a reward placed above it. In some cases, the flower was not visible during testing, yet the bees still succeeded.
Researchers also tested whether bees could roll a ball into a pit and climb onto it to reach a reward located on the ceiling. Prior exposure to a blue ring associated with sugar and to a movable Styrofoam ball helped some bees perform better, even without direct training on the full task.
Bees with experience of both objects performed better than those with limited or no exposure. Additional tests introduced barriers that blocked visual access to the flower and allowed bees to explore the setup before choosing an action.
Some bees attempted the task even when no reward was present. However, most successful bees directly moved the ball into the correct position without trying incorrect locations first.
The study suggests that bumble bees may be capable of spontaneous problem-solving and that their behavior is not solely based on trial and error. Researchers note that further study is needed to understand the decision-making process behind this behavior.
