Boiling Water Turns To Ice In Freezing 8-Degree Cold At Newport

Newport, North Carolina, USA – Staff from the US National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City braved freezing temperatures on February 2, 2026, to conduct a dramatic science experiment outside their office.

With temperatures at just 8 degrees Fahrenheit, the meteorologists threw a mug of boiling water into the air. The water instantly turned to steam and tiny ice pellets that fell back to the ground, illustrating the extreme cold in real time.

The experiment highlighted the intensity of the winter conditions, while offering a playful demonstration of science in action. Staff reminded the public to stay warm and warned against attempting the experiment at home due to the risk of burns.
