Newport, North Carolina, USA – Staff from the US National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City braved freezing temperatures on February 2, 2026, to conduct a dramatic science experiment outside their office.

With temperatures at just 8 degrees Fahrenheit, the meteorologists threw a mug of boiling water into the air. The water instantly turned to steam and tiny ice pellets that fell back to the ground, illustrating the extreme cold in real time.
