Blind Eel Seen In Rare Mexico Underground Cave Footage

Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico – Video footage from inside an anchialine cave system shows rare underground wildlife, including a blind eel and cave-dwelling shrimps, moving through a submerged environment beneath the rainforest.

The caves form a network of flooded sinkholes and underwater passages where fresh and saltwater mix, with no sunlight reaching the interior. The system is completely isolated from the surface and supports specialised cave life.

Among the species shown are shrimps from the genus Typhlatya, which are a key part of the underground ecosystem. These shrimps feed on bacterial layers in the cave water and help support the food web by converting microbial growth into animal biomass.

The footage also shows a blind eel moving through the dark cave environment, highlighting adapted wildlife living in these conditions.

The anchialine system is part of a broader subterranean habitat in Mexico where organisms survive through chemical-based food chains rather than sunlight.
