Aurora, Illinois – Firefighters and animal control officers joined forces to rescue a young deer that was in danger of drowning in the Fox River.

The response began on Wednesday morning after crews received a report of a fawn in distress in the river.

According to city officials, staff working on the Downer Place Bridge in downtown Aurora spotted the young deer after it emerged from a drainage pipe in the Fox River.

Rescuers launched a boat and reached the struggling animal in the water.

The fawn was safely pulled from the river and taken to the Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife Center.

The young deer was later named Jonas in honor of the firefighter who rescued him from the water.
