Aurora Police Stop Grinch From Stealing Christmas With Heroic Help

Aurora, IL – On December 17, 2025, the Aurora Police Department faced an unusual holiday threat when a Grinch-like figure tried to make off with presents from Santa’s Christmas tree inside Fox Valley Mall.

Officer Braden Lentini, on routine foot patrol, quickly responded after a good Samaritan named Emmet spotted the suspect. With timely assistance from a costumed Santa Claus, Officer Lentini tracked down the would-be Christmas thief.

The Grinch was taken into custody peacefully, ending the brief, chaotic dash through the mall. No injuries were reported, and there was never any real danger to the public—or to Christmas.

The suspect has been charged with Theft, Criminal Damage to Property, Resisting Arrest, and Obstructing a Peace Officer. He is currently held at the City of Aurora Detention Center pending a court appearance.

Police Chief Matt Thomas praised both Officer Lentini and Emmet: “While this incident brought some laughs, it also showed how quickly our officers respond and how strong our community is. Most importantly, no one was hurt, and there was no threat to public safety—or to Christmas.”

The Aurora Police Department released body-worn camera footage of the arrest to share the moment of holiday spirit and transparency with the community. Thanks to teamwork, quick thinking, and a little holiday magic, Christmas remained safe.
