7.7 Earthquake Shakes Hachinohe Mall As Shoppers Remain Calm During Tremors

Hachinohe, Japan – Video filmed by an X user named @NMTV_jp shows shoppers inside a shopping mall and supermarket in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, reacting calmly as a powerful earthquake strikes, as described in the caption: “It shook, huh”.

The shaky handheld footage moves through brightly lit aisles and sections of a large retail complex. It begins near escalators and open corridors before panning across multiple store areas.

The camera passes a frozen food section marked “FROZEN,” bakery counters labeled “BAKERY,” produce displays on rolling carts, deli cases, and a café area labeled “cafèrrant,” alongside coffee displays and an ATM.

Shoppers continue moving with carts or pause briefly during the shaking. Some crouch slightly or check their phones as the floor and fixtures begin to tremble. Ceiling lights, hanging signs, and shelves of packaged goods shake visibly while people remain composed, showing little panic.

The footage was recorded during a major magnitude 7.5 to 7.7 earthquake that struck off the Sanriku Coast of northeastern Japan on April 20, 2026. It caused strong shaking across Aomori Prefecture, including Hachinohe, and triggered initial tsunami warnings later downgraded to advisories for coastal regions in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate.
