Orihuela, Spain – A National Police operation in Orihuela (Alicante) has exposed a serious environmental crime after authorities rescued 400 goldfinches that had been captured in Lorca.
The case has resulted in a criminal investigation and judicial proceedings against two detainees, who are accused of offences against flora and fauna under Spain’s Penal Code. Authorities say the investigation covers both the illegal capture of the birds and their trafficking.
The birds were reportedly being transported toward France as part of an organised shipment. Investigators consider this planned transfer an aggravating factor due to the logistical coordination involved.
Authorities confirmed: “Two detainees for a crime against flora and fauna,” following the interception of the vehicle involved.
Under Spanish law, crimes of this nature can carry prison sentences ranging from six months to two years. Courts may also impose special disqualification from any profession linked to wildlife, along with substantial financial penalties based on the illegal market value of the species involved.
Officials added that the final outcome will depend on biological expert analysis, which will help determine the level of civil responsibility. The conditions in which the birds were transported were described as unsanitary, reinforcing concerns about illegal wildlife trafficking operations across borders.
Authorities also highlighted the importance of increased surveillance and coordination between enforcement units, noting that illegal wildlife trade continues to generate significant financial profits.
The case underscores ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity and enforce environmental law against organised wildlife crime networks.
