Thousands Watch Spectacular Viking Fire Festival In Shetland

Lerwick, Shetland, Scotland – Video filmed by X user Simon Hunter captures the vibrant scenes of Up Helly Aa 2026, Europe’s largest Viking-themed fire festival, held on the last Tuesday in January.

The footage shows participants, known as guizers, dressed in elaborate Norse-inspired costumes, including fur-trimmed cloaks, horned or winged helmets, chainmail-like tunics, shields, and axes. They march in formation down Lerwick’s streets at night, illuminated by hundreds of blazing hand-held torches.

The focus is on the Jarl Squad, the lead “Viking chief” and his team in the most ornate outfits. Flames reflect off their metal props and faces, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Spectators line the streets, cheering, waving, and listening to chants and traditional songs echoing through the winter night.

The video, posted with the caption “Up Helly Aa 2026,” has drawn hundreds of views, multiple likes and reposts, and praise for its cultural significance. Agencies requested permission to distribute the footage, which was granted with credit to the filmer.

Up Helly Aa traditions include torchlit marches, the burning of a full-size Viking longship, feasting, and community celebration rooted in Shetland’s Norse heritage. The 2026 festival marked a full-scale return after pandemic restrictions, drawing thousands despite cold weather.
