Texas Rescue Frees Over 70 Dogs, Birds, and Horses From Alleged Neglect

Ballinger, Texas – Humane World for Animals, alongside the Runnels County Sheriff’s Office, rescued over 60 dogs and puppies, as well as several chickens, ducks, geese, and two horses, from a property in Ballinger on February 2026 after allegations of severe neglect.

Law enforcement executed a search and seizure warrant at approximately 7:30 a.m. Responders were met with a strong ammonia odor and dogs perched on windowsills, barking and clamoring for attention. Inside, the scene was chaotic: dogs roamed through the residence amid feces and urine covering much of the floors and furniture. Many dogs were underweight with raw, irritated skin and missing fur, while outdoor animals were found in small pens with minimal protection from the elements.

Several puppies were discovered in dark, confined spaces, including one young female shivering on the floor with a wound on her head and signs of anemia. Veterinarians observed scars and wounds on many animals, likely from fights caused by overcrowded conditions.

“The moment you walk in, it hits you like a wall. Between the constant noise of barking, filth, odor and the chaos of dozens of dogs in overcrowded conditions, this scene is a complete sensory overload—I can only imagine the stress and suffering these animals have endured living like this,” said Alex Gamez, Texas state director, Humane World for Animals.

“The Runnels County Sheriff’s Office takes animal cruelty seriously. However, as a small rural county, our resources are limited, and this particular incident was far more than we could handle alone,” said Sheriff Carl Squyres. “Without the assistance of Humane World for Animals, the dogs, equine, and fowl that were seized would still be suffering.”

All animals were removed from the property and transported to undisclosed locations for thorough veterinary exams and care.
