Cangas de Onis, Spain – Two speleologists became trapped inside the Cave of Water (Demues–Onis) after a sudden storm unleashed a violent swell, flooding the passages and blocking their exit.
The Guardia Civil Mountain Service launched a rescue operation after 01:00h, entering the cave under dangerous conditions. Rescuers fought against rushing water, roaring noise, and narrow tunnels as they installed a new safety line to reach those trapped.
The mission required exceptional courage, technical skill, and steady composure in the face of powerful currents and darkness.
At 4:25 p.m., both speleologists were brought out safely, suffering only slight hypothermia.
The successful rescue was credited to the professionalism and preparation of the Special Rescue Group for Mountain Intervention (GREIM) of Cangas de Onis, whose effort turned a night of peril into a story of survival.
