Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii – The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory carried out a monitoring overflight of Halemaumau crater on the morning of December 2, 2025.
With permission from Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, scientists reached the crater floor to collect a sample of lava from episode 37.
During the visit, the team also captured visual and thermal imagery to map how material from episode 37 — including lava flows and tephra — is distributed across the crater floor.
Lava fountained only from the north vent during episode 37, erupting for about 9 hours on November 25.
Since the end of episode 37, the summit region of Kilauea volcano has shown inflationary deformation, a sign that another eruptive episode is possible.
