Collier County, Florida – On February 18, 2026, a traffic operation on State Road 82 took an unexpected turn when a lone cow wandered onto the roadway.

Cpl. David Mercado of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office was conducting speed enforcement, making multiple stops and issuing citations throughout the morning. The situation escalated when the animal appeared in the path of oncoming vehicles.

Dashcam footage posted by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office shows the cow’s owner on horseback pursuing and lassoing the animal, while a Florida Highway Patrol vehicle moves alongside with its emergency lights flashing.

Cpl. Mercado coordinated with FHP to manage traffic and ensure the safety of drivers and the animal. The cow was safely returned to a nearby pasture without incident.

Authorities emphasized the importance of caution when driving, even during routine operations, as unpredictable events like this can occur.
