Mediterranean – On 21 November 2025, a view of 24 F-35B jets embarked on the flight deck of HMS Prince of Wales marked the United Kingdom Carrier Strike Group Full Operating Capability. The carrier is hosting the largest fifth generation Carrier Air Wing ever embarked on HMS Prince of Wales, with 24 F-35B jets on deck in support of NATO during NEPTUNE STRIKE 25-4.
The deployment of this air wing in NEPTUNE STRIKE 25-4 demonstrates NATO’s willingness and readiness to act in support of allied nations’ peace and security. Italian F-35Bs have been embarked on HMS Prince of Wales for NEPTUNE STRIKE, an enhanced vigilance activity under Operation HIGHMAST, proving interoperability and interchangeability between the two nations.
The Joint Carrier Air Wing has carried out NEPTUNE STRIKE, showcasing the UK and Italy’s ability and willingness to operate together on behalf of NATO in the Mediterranean and beyond. Led by UK flagship HMS Prince of Wales and involving a dozen nations, the eight-month mission known as Operation HIGHMAST is now entering its final stages.
After operations across the Indo-Pacific over the last five months, the task group has returned to the Mediterranean for further multinational exercises before beginning its homeward voyage. Operation HIGHMAST aims to reaffirm the UK’s commitment to security in the Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific, demonstrate collective resolve with allies, and highlight British trade and industry. Over the deployment, upwards of 4,500 British personnel have taken part, including nearly 600 Royal Air Force personnel, 900 soldiers, and 2,500 Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines.
