Tyler, Texas – A woman discharged an officer’s gun during an arrest on Sunday afternoon following a theft call at Dollar General on Gentry Parkway.
Police located two suspects nearby. One complied. The other, Brianna Erwin, resisted and walked away. When an officer attempted to detain her, she pulled away and ran. After tripping, she was handcuffed.
Bodycam footage captures the officer shouting, “Let go of my gun,” before it discharged. Erwin had grabbed the holstered pistol and got her finger into the trigger guard. The round fired from inside the holster.
To stop further escalation, the officer used a closed-hand strike.
Before transport, Erwin claimed she was pregnant. She was examined by Tyler Fire EMTs and later evaluated again by medical staff at Smith County Jail.
While in custody, she said she did not mean to fire the weapon. Officers also found a glass pipe with a crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.
Erwin was arrested on several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault of a public servant, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, evading arrest or detention, and harassment of a public servant. Theft-related charges remain under investigation.
