Kahului, United States – X user Fahad Naim documented a nighttime scene at Kahului Airport (OGG) in Maui during an intense downpour on March 14, 2026.
Sheets of rain poured across the tarmac under bright overhead floodlights while a misty haze spread through the airport grounds. A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737, recognizable by its blue, red, and yellow tail livery, remained parked near a gate with its engines off and no personnel visible.
From beneath the aircraft’s wing, raindrops streaked across the lens and dripped from the fuselage as the storm continued. Wider views showed the apron blanketed by heavy rainfall, with distant runway lights glowing faintly through the deluge and pooled water reflecting the surrounding lights.
The conditions occurred during a powerful Kona low storm that battered Maui County with widespread flooding, road closures, downed trees, and wind gusts exceeding 70 mph. The severe weather prompted airport delays and cancellations across Hawaii as some areas received more than 20 inches of rain within 24 hours.
Emergency declarations were issued and schools were closed across the islands during the storm. No injuries were reported at the airport.
