Philippine Coast Guard Recovers 22 Cadavers From Sunken MV Trisha Kerstin 3 After 27 Days Of High-Risk Diving

Baluk-Baluk Island, Basilan – On February 23, 2026, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Technical Diving Group completed a full underwater search of the sunken MV Trisha Kerstin 3 after 27 days of high-risk wreck diving operations.

“Since January 28, 2026, PCG technical divers have worked through strong underwater currents, near-zero visibility due to heavy siltation, submerged hazards, and the vessel’s structural instability for the recovery of 22 cadavers from various sections,” said Commodore Rejard Marfe, Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao Commander.

Divers systematically searched Deck A, Deck B, the car deck including vehicles, and the engine room despite oil contamination, debris, and limited visibility.

The vessel is listing to port, with both exposed sides of the hull intact. Partially collapsed vehicles on the car deck added obstructions and made interior access more challenging.

“While the entire vessel has now been searched, the PCG-TDG will continue diving operations until February 26, 2026, to conduct re-swiping procedures. This is to ensure that no area is left unchecked and to provide assurance to the families awaiting closure,” Commodore Marfe added.

All operations were documented through underwater video recordings to support the ongoing investigation.
