New York City – On June 14, X user NewYorkCityKopp shared a video from the lively Pigeon Fest held at Hudson Yards.
He described the festival as a fun mix of art, science, and city life. It took place under a giant pigeon statue and offered quirky shows, creative play, and a new way to look at the birds of the city.
“Pigeon Fest was today,” he said, adding that it was “absolutely worth checking out.” The festival aimed to “reclaim the pigeon” and make people appreciate these birds in a new way.
Many New Yorkers came to the High Line for the event. Last year, a 16-foot pigeon statue was placed there and became the symbol of the celebration.
There were games, merchandise, and a “Pigeon Impersonation Pageant.” The contest was hosted by famous costume designer Machine Dazzle. Contestants were judged on costume, walk, and pigeon sounds.
Seven people took part in the pageant. Miriam Abrahams, a British artist who has lived in New York for 11 years, won first prize and a gold crown.
“It was so New York and just incredible,” said Barbara Friedman. “One of the funniest things was that people were throwing bread at them… the pictures were the absolute delight of this. Only in New York would people be so invested.”
New York City is home to about nine million pigeons. The festival wanted people to see them in a better light.
Alan van Capelle, Executive Director of the High Line, said, “Love them or hate them, people are fascinated by our feathered neighbors.”
