California, USA – On January 13, 2026, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) began required flood control releases from Oroville Dam’s main spillway.

Officials emphasized that these releases are not only an impressive display but also provide significant benefits to California communities.

With reduced runoff levels and drier weather expected in the coming week, DWR announced it will be gradually reducing outflows.

Some of the water released for flood control is captured downstream for beneficial uses by local landowners, communities, and the State Water Project, supporting agricultural and municipal needs.
