Port Orange, FL – On February 16, 2026, Officers Peterson, Velez, and Herstein acted swiftly when a vehicle crashed into a retention pond, risking the life of its elderly driver.

Authorities later learned the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and into the water. The car’s locks were inoperable, trapping the driver inside.

Without hesitation, the three officers, joined by two citizen witnesses, entered the pond and worked together to remove the driver safely from the partially submerged vehicle.
