Valdezcaray, Spain – On Sunday, December 21, two hikers, aged 55 and 58, were rescued after being swept 200 meters by an avalanche in the Valdezcaray ski area.
The operation involved specialists from the Mountain Rescue Service and the Civil Guard Air Service, working in coordination with Valdezcaray ski station personnel. The rescue presented a technical challenge due to strong winds, persistent fog, and fresh snow, all of which limited visibility and access.
Rescuers also faced the constant threat of additional avalanches throughout the hours-long operation.
The helicopter team’s skill was crucial, operating at the limits of its capacity in a high-risk environment to reach the stranded hikers safely.
This rescue highlights the training, professionalism, and commitment of mountain specialists, even under the most adverse conditions.
