Catalonia, Valencia, Balearic Islands, Murcia, Spain – On the night of January 29, 2026, skywatchers across eastern Spain were treated to a striking celestial display as an Eta Draconid meteor briefly lit up the darkness.
Observers across the region witnessed a brilliant streak tear through the night sky, lighting up the darkness for a brief but unforgettable moment. The meteor, recorded by multiple video detection stations—including Blesa-Teruel, Esparreguera, Estepa-Seville, Folgueroles, Pujalt, La Mola de Xert, Morata de Jalón, Sant Fost de Campsentelles, Sant Mateu, and Vallirana—was captured from numerous vantage points, providing valuable data for astronomers.
Preliminary calculations estimate the meteor’s absolute magnitude at -13±2, marking it as an exceptionally bright flash in the sky. Experts suggest that the fireball likely originated from the Eta Draconid stream, part of the annual meteor shower cataloged under FED, MDC #0427.
The meteor was visible over a broad range, from Catalonia to the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, and the Murcia region. Amateur astronomers and dedicated observers alike shared their awe at the sight, celebrating a fleeting but spectacular moment of natural wonder in the night sky.
