Juneau, Alaska – A dramatic video recorded by Howard Bender captures the Mendenhall River overflowing on August 13, 2025, after a glacial lake outburst from Suicide Basin. Water levels reached a new record of 16.65 feet.
The footage shows turbulent waters rushing toward nearby areas, highlighting the severity of the flooding and the risks posed to surrounding terrain.
This event is part of a global trend of increasing glacial lake outburst floods, driven by melting glaciers linked to climate change. It coincides with extreme weather events worldwide, including heavy rainfall and other natural disasters in 2025.
Howard Bender said: “About 60-70 yards from my house here in Juneau is the Mendenhall River. Risen about 6 feet over the last few hours. It’s like the universe is giving us a Derrick Henry-like stiff arm or something!”
