Masked Protesters Hurl Petrol Bombs As Chaos Erupts In Ballymena Ireland

Ballymena, Ireland – On June 9, NI Emergency Response Vids posted a video showing protests turning violent in Ballymena.

They said, “Police have came under attack with Petrol Bombs.”

The unrest followed a protest after an alleged sexual assault. Police confirmed that missiles were thrown at officers and property was damaged.

Crowds had gathered near the site of the reported assault. The protest escalated into public disorder in the town, which lies about 30 minutes from Belfast.

Police advised the public to avoid the Clonavon Road area. Officers stayed on the scene to monitor the situation.

Chief Superintendent Sue Steen said, “We are urging everyone to remain calm and to act responsibly. Violence and disorder will only place people at greater risk. Our priority is to keep the community safe.”

Local media reported masked individuals throwing masonry. A police car had two of its windows smashed.

The protest erupted after two boys appeared in court in connection with the alleged sexual assault.

Police had earlier announced that two teenage boys were charged in the case involving a teenage girl in the Clonavon Terrace area.
