Crystal River, Florida – On December 9, Sleet, a rescued manatee, was released back into the Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and partners.
Sleet was originally rescued in January 2025 from the springs due to cold stress. The rescue involved FWC, ZooTampa, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge.
After nearly 11 months of care, Sleet made a remarkable recovery thanks to the dedicated efforts of ZooTampa and Mote Marine Laboratory. The manatee grew significantly during rehabilitation, demonstrating the success of the long-term care.
At the time of rescue, Sleet weighed 295 pounds and measured 6.5 feet. Upon release, the manatee had grown to 730 pounds and 8.2 feet in length.
The release marked a triumphant return of Sleet to its natural habitat, highlighting the ongoing conservation efforts for Florida’s manatees.
