Man Throws Dog At Officer Then Takes Woman Hostage In Albuquerque

Albuquerque, New Mexico – A man was arrested after throwing a dog at a police officer and taking a woman hostage during an attempted escape.

On May 5, police encountered a man loitering outside a gas station on Candelaria Road in northeast Albuquerque. A no trespassing sign was posted directly above him.

Officers identified the man as Bobby Chavez, who had felony warrants. When they told him he was being detained for trespassing, Chavez was holding a small dog.

Police say Chavez threw the dog at an officer and ran.

During the chase, Chavez jumped a fence and entered a nearby apartment. The resident texted a neighbor, saying Chavez would not let her leave.

She eventually escaped and informed police that Chavez was not allowed in her home. Chavez told the woman he was running from the police.

Officers took Chavez into custody shortly after.

The dog was located and turned over to Animal Welfare. Authorities said the dog did not belong to Chavez. Its rightful owner has been identified and will be reunited with the pet.
