Jacksonville, Florida – A dramatic rescue unfolded on February 25, 2026, when Andrew Giddens, who had been missing since February 23, was found alive buried in mud near a borrow pit on Vulcan Materials Company property.
Giddens’ vehicle had been discovered abandoned, prompting Deputy Holmes, who previously encountered Giddens trespassing in 2023, to notify Vulcan and request a property search. An aerial search by law enforcement initially found no trace of him. Family members reported Giddens was struggling emotionally following a recent breakup, leading to a missing persons report.
Vulcan employees spotted Giddens shoulder-deep in mud, almost camouflaged below the surrounding grass. Due to the unstable ground, the employees could not reach him directly.
Multiple rescue teams responded, including Putnam County Fire Rescue, Palatka Fire Department, Melrose Fire Department, and Clay County Fire Rescue. Rescuers first attempted to drag Giddens out with ropes, but the unstable conditions required ladders, backboards, and pallets to create a safe working platform. The technical rescue proceeded carefully to avoid further danger.
Giddens was finally freed around 8:30 p.m. and airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition. Authorities confirmed no charges will be pursued due to his mental health.
Officials emphasized the importance of checking on loved ones during times of high stress and reminded the public that support is available through the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.
