Madrid, Spain – A video recorded by X user CHUS from a home window opposite the Barajas metro station shows severe flooding hitting the Barajas neighborhood early in the morning.
The footage shows a residential street with parked cars, multi story apartment buildings with balconies, streetlights, and the entrance and exit of the metro station clearly visible.
A massive underground pipe burst sent powerful streams of water across the road, quickly flooding large areas and reaching the metro station surroundings. Wet pavement and strong currents indicate partial submersion near station entrances.
The caption reads, “Woke up feeling great here in the neighborhood,” highlighting the irony amid the chaos. The sky appears overcast and wintry, with no active rainfall visible.
The video was posted on February 5, 2026. The rupture involved a 900 millimeter main pipe on Avenida de Logroño near the station, around 6 to 7 AM. The burst created a geyser-like torrent that flooded the M-14 tunnel connecting airport terminals T1, T2, T3, and T4, submerging parts under about 1.4 meters of water.
About 20 people were trapped in vehicles and rescued by Madrid firefighters with no injuries reported. The flooding caused major traffic jams and disrupted access to Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas Airport.
Metro Line 8 service was suspended in both directions between the airport stations and Barajas for several hours before restoration. Around 5,000 properties temporarily lost water supply, while nearby homes, businesses, and streets were flooded, including damage to a restaurant wall.
Tolls on the M-12 motorway were lifted in both directions to ease airport access. Authorities confirmed the rupture was not directly caused by storms, though weather conditions worsened the situation.
