Kilauea Summit, United States – A timelapse video captured on February 15, 2026, documented episode 42 of lava fountaining at Kilauea, revealing a sudden and striking change in the flow of molten rock within the crater.
The footage was recorded by the KWcam, positioned along the northwest rim of Halemaumau Crater, one of several monitoring cameras placed around the Kilauea summit caldera to track volcanic activity and conditions.
Images taken throughout the day were combined to form the timelapse, showing the intense lava fountains active during the eruption episode.
At approximately 4:20 p.m. HST, the main lava channel abruptly redirected. Earlier in the eruption, most of the lava had been flowing toward the center of the crater floor.
Within only a few minutes, the molten stream shifted course, moving into the northwestern section of the crater, marking a dramatic change in the eruption’s behavior.
