Tampa, Florida – On September 21, 2025, deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Aviation Section reported being struck multiple times by a laser while flying over the city.

Ground deputies were quickly guided to the source of the laser, located at the Avina apartment complex. A 13-year-old boy, Angel Lacen, was found responsible for the strikes and taken into custody. He has been charged with Misuse of a Laser Lighting Device.

HCSO officials stressed the serious danger posed by pointing lasers at aircraft. “Pointing a laser at an aircraft is not a prank. It is dangerous, puts lives at risk,” a spokesperson said.

Authorities confirmed that deputies will continue monitoring the skies and taking action to ensure the safety of both air crews and the community below.
