León, Spain – 27 August 2025 – Intense wildfires rage across the mountains of León in the Castilla y León region, sending thick smoke and towering flames into the sky. The fires spread rapidly over rugged terrain, captured vividly during dusk and dawn.
Over 3,700 residents from 16 municipalities have been evacuated as the flames approach homes and critical areas. Among the threatened sites is the UNESCO World Heritage area of Les Médulas, where fire crews are struggling to protect cultural landmarks.
The largest blaze in neighboring Galicia has consumed 3,000 hectares in Ourense, highlighting the scale of the wildfire crisis across northern Spain. Extreme weather, including low humidity, strong winds, and ongoing drought, is worsening conditions and complicating containment efforts.
Footage from Igüeña shows the fire jumping valleys and undermining strategies to close the perimeter with backfires, demonstrating the unpredictable intensity of the inferno. The Junta de Castilla y León’s logo confirms official monitoring and coordination of firefighting operations.
Authorities continue round-the-clock efforts to safeguard residents and preserve affected natural and cultural sites. With conditions remaining critical, the region faces sustained wildfire threats in the coming days.
