Middle Bass Island, Ohio, USA – Ice-breaking operations are underway on Lake Erie north of Middle Bass Island as the Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay (WTGB 102) works as part of Operation Coal Shovel 2025.

Operation Coal Shovel is an annual domestic mission conducted across Lakes Huron, Ontario, Erie, St. Clair, the St. Clair/Detroit river system, and the St. Lawrence Seaway to keep waterways navigable during winter.

The Bristol Bay clears thick ice, ensuring safe passage for vessels and supporting ongoing maritime operations throughout the Great Lakes and connecting waterways.
