Highway Stop Turns Into Dramatic Rescue On I-40 Near Clinton

Clinton, Oklahoma – A week ago, Trooper Eric Burchett #346 was patrolling Interstate 40 near Clinton when he spotted a vehicle stopped on the shoulder and pulled over to check on the driver.

As he approached the Jeep, he immediately saw the man inside was in severe distress. The driver, who was alone, had inflicted serious injuries to his throat and wrists.

Trooper Burchett quickly removed the knife from the driver, notified OHP Communications and requested an ambulance before running back to his patrol unit to retrieve his medical kit.

When he returned, the driver attempted to get out. Weak from blood loss, the man grabbed the trooper in an attempt to attack him. Trooper Burchett reacted by leg sweeping the driver to the ground so he could begin lifesaving medical care.

He applied pressure to the man’s wounds and, recognising the seriousness of the situation, called for a medical helicopter to ensure faster treatment.

OHP Lieutenant Aaron Hunter #148 and a police officer arrived moments later to assist. Together, they worked to stabilise the man until EMS reached the scene. EMS then transported him to a local hospital.

The agency stated that Trooper Burchett’s decision to stop, along with his rapid response, saved the man’s life.

The statement also urged anyone experiencing stress, depression or thoughts of self-harm to reach out for support, noting the Suicide & Crisis line is available 24/7 at 988.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol thanked all agencies involved for their teamwork, dedication and quick response.
