Hawaii Faces Severe Flooding As Kona Storm Pounds Islands

Kahului, USA – Footage shows a drive along the shoreline in Kahului, Maui, where Kanaha Pond is completely filled to the brim with murky brown water spreading across the wetland beneath gray, overcast skies.

Nearby drainage ditches and roadside culverts are seen overflowing quickly, with fast-moving currents spilling onto pavement and grassy edges during heavy downpours. The camera moves across the flooded area, capturing the swollen pond pressing up against barriers and water channels struggling to contain the excess rainfall, with no visible people or vehicles nearby aside from the filming car.

The scenes were recorded on March 15, 2026, at the height of a powerful Kona low storm that struck the Hawaiian Islands from March 10 to 16. The system brought torrential rain totals of 20 to 46 inches in parts of Maui, triggering widespread flooding, road closures, landslides, and power outages impacting thousands. The slow-moving storm led to a statewide emergency declaration and multiple swift-water rescues across the islands.

The person who recorded the scene said: “Kanaha pond is full. All drainage ditches are full and overflowing. We have another week of this kona storm”.
