Real Sitio de San Ildefonso, Spain – In a daring winter rescue, the Guardia Civil saved two hikers early Thursday morning after they became trapped on Pico de Dos Hermanas due to heavy snow and ice.
The hikers, a 19-year-old woman from Madrid and a 20-year-old man from Rivas-Vaciamadrid, were caught on a rocky section called “Los Claveles,” unable to advance because of steep slopes, icy conditions, and limited equipment.
Specialists from the GREIM unit based in Navacerrada reached the hikers using short rope techniques and mini rappels, carefully evacuating them to safety. Both were later transported in good health to Puerto de Navacerrada, where family members picked them up.
The rescue was coordinated by Segovia’s Operational Services Center (COS) after receiving the emergency alert through 112. Authorities praised the rapid and precise response, which ensured the hikers’ safety despite treacherous terrain and poor visibility caused by fog.
The Guardia Civil urged hikers to take precautions during winter excursions, plan routes carefully, check weather forecasts, and carry appropriate technical equipment to avoid similar emergencies.
