Funnel Cloud And Fierce Winds Strike New York State Fairgrounds

Syracuse, New York – A powerful thunderstorm approached the New York State Fairgrounds on August 24, 2025, producing a large funnel cloud that raised concerns of potential tornado activity.

The storm prompted temporary closures and shelter orders as heavy rain and high gusts swept through the area. While not officially classified as a tornado, it caused visible damage, including broken fences and fallen trees.

The National Weather Service issued warnings for destructive winds reaching up to 80 mph and the possibility of large hail, part of a wider pattern of severe weather across the region.

Video footage captured the ominous approach from the Orange Lot at the fairgrounds, showing the funnel cloud and turbulent skies.

NYSDOT Central NY commented: β€œAn ominous sight as damaging storms swept through CNY.”

Officials urged caution as conditions began to ease, advising drivers to slow down, increase following distances, and avoid driving through standing water.
