Lake Erie, USA – On January 21, 2026, the motor vessel American Spirit, a lake freighter, became trapped in ice while navigating the frigid waters of Lake Erie.

The Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay (WTGB 105) was called in to assist, using ice-breaking capabilities to carve a safe path for the vessel.

The operation ensured the American Spirit could continue its transit across the Great Lakes despite the hazardous conditions.
