Alcala De Guadaira, Spain – A massive fire broke out Wednesday at a chemical distribution warehouse near Seville, sending thick black smoke into the sky and forcing residents to stay indoors.
Emergency services received hundreds of calls starting at 1:20 p.m. local time about the fire at the La Red industrial park in Alcala de Guadaira, about 16 kilometers southeast of Seville.
The warehouse belongs to local chemical distributor Plainsur. Workers reported that everyone was accounted for, with no injuries or people trapped, though emergency services had not officially confirmed this.
Authorities warned the town’s 77,000 residents to stay inside with windows and doors shut due to uncertainty over the smoke’s toxicity. Warehouses nearby were evacuated as a precaution.
Plainsur’s website shows it handles flammable chemicals including ethylene, toluene, and industrial solvents.
