Guatemala City, Guatemala – A powerful earthquake struck the country on July 8, triggering the evacuation of the Tikal Futura Hotel & Convention Center.
The tremor, recorded at a magnitude of 5.2, was confirmed by Insivumeh. Its epicenter was located in the department of Escuintla, near the borders of Guatemala and Sacatepequez departments.
The quake was strongly felt in several nearby municipalities, including Palín, Villa Nueva, and Amatitlán.
A video recorded by X user Edgar shows the moment people were evacuated from the hotel and convention center in response to the quake.
Conred has begun a nationwide monitoring operation to assess potential damage and check for any injuries.
Authorities have urged the public to keep their 72-hour emergency kits ready and follow official communications for further updates.
