Dogs Trapped Underground Rescued In High-Risk Storm Operation

Cosenza, Italy – Firefighters in Cosenza carried out a complex rescue operation on Saturday, January 10, 2026, saving two dog puppies and their mother who were trapped inside a rainwater drainage pipe during severe weather.

The intervention began in the early morning hours, when a fire brigade team was dispatched to a concrete pipe where the animals had become stuck in an extremely difficult position. The depth of the pipe and the surrounding conditions made the rescue particularly dangerous.

Because of the risk to the animals’ safety, firefighters were forced to carry out highly precise maneuvers. Heavy equipment was brought in, including earth-moving machinery and an excavator fitted with a demolition hammer, which was used to carefully open the pipe without causing collapses or further hazards.

The operation was long and delicate, carried out under heavy rain and especially adverse weather conditions. Despite the challenges, the rescue was completed successfully.

After being freed, the two puppies and their mother were transferred to the care of a kennel, where they will receive veterinary assistance and protection.
