Panticosa, Huesca, Spain – A tragic avalanche on Monday swept through Tablato Peak near the Panticosa spa, killing three experienced mountaineers and injuring a fourth woman.
The group of six was ski touring at around 2,700 meters when a slab of snow unexpectedly broke and buried four of them. Two climbers escaped on their own, while the other four were trapped. The injured woman suffered hypothermia and bruises and was taken to San Jorge General Hospital in Huesca.
Among the deceased were Jorge García Dihinx, a respected pediatrician from Huesca, his wife Natalia Román from Zaragoza, and a mountaineer from the Basque Country. Their bodies were transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Zaragoza.
Jorge Azcón, President of Aragon, called the incident “dramatic and sad” and urged climbers to act responsibly. “It’s just bad luck; zero risk doesn’t exist when you go up into the mountains,” he said, praising the emergency teams for their rapid response.
Political leaders, including Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Pilar Alegría, expressed condolences. The Government Delegate in Aragon described it as “a typical winter avalanche,” while the Basque Government extended support to the family of the mountaineer from Gipuzkoa.
The tragedy highlights the dangers of high-altitude winter sports, even for seasoned mountaineers.
