Splendora, TX – On January 31, 2026, officers with the Splendora Police Department Criminal Interdiction Unit faced a high-speed threat on local roads. A passenger vehicle was traveling approximately 90 mph in a posted 65-mph zone when officers attempted a traffic stop.
The driver accelerated, sparking a vehicle pursuit. Once conditions allowed, officers deployed the department’s newly implemented Grappler Police Bumper. This device, described as a “Batman-like tool,” uses a high-strength tethered net to disable a vehicle’s rear tire, bringing it to a controlled stop while reducing the risk of serious collisions.
“The Grappler gives our officers a safer way to end dangerous pursuits,” said Chief Wally Wieghat. “This technology helped prevent a potentially tragic outcome by protecting our officers, the occupants inside the vehicle, and the innocent motorists traveling our roadways. It is a proven tool that saves lives.”
After the vehicle was stopped, officers issued commands for the driver to exit. The suspect ignored instructions and attempted to accelerate, but the Grappler had fully disabled the vehicle. Officers safely approached and removed the driver, who became combative and was subdued using a TASER.
Other occupants, including children, were safely guided from the vehicle. Chief Wieghat highlighted the danger: “The fact that children were inside the vehicle makes this incident especially troubling. Our officers train for moments like this so that even under dangerous circumstances, lives—especially the lives of children—are protected.”
The driver now faces multiple criminal charges, including Felony Evading Arrest or Detention with a Motor Vehicle. All charges are being filed with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
