Chatham, Massachusetts – A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod crew rescued the sole mariner aboard the disabled sailing vessel PORTO with the help of a Good Samaritan on November 21, 2024.
A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod hoisted the mariner from the disabled PORTO approximately 255 miles southeast of Chatham.
The Coast Guard launched both an MH-60 and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft after the PORTO reported losing rudder control and engine power. The vessel was carrying no survival gear and had only a handheld VHF radio for communication.
The crew of the nearby sailing vessel Life of Reily III stayed on scene and kept contact with the mariner until Coast Guard crews arrived.
The MH-60 crew then transported the rescued mariner safely to Hyannis Regional Airport.
