Austin, Texas – A daring rescue unfolded on June 6 as Leander Animal Services and Leander Fire worked together to save an 8-week-old baby raccoon trapped in a tree.
A couple walking nearby heard a noise and saw a mother raccoon with two babies running across the ground. But one baby had been left behind, still stuck in the tree.
Leander Fire arrived with a ladder truck to reach the stranded raccoon. As a firefighter climbed up, the raccoon suddenly jumped toward him.
Leander Animal Services stood ready below and managed to catch the baby in a net before she hit the ground.
The raccoon appeared uninjured and was quickly moved from the net into a transport box.
She was then taken to MoonShine Wildlife Rehabilitation, where she will be cared for until she is old enough to survive on her own.
