Animal Rescue Team And Veterinarians Save Horse After Eight Hours Down In Pinon Hills

Pinon Hills, California – On July 21, 2025, San Bernardino County Fire’s Large Animal Rescue Team joined forces with local veterinarians to rescue a 38-year-old horse that had been down for over eight hours.

The horse’s owner had struggled all day to help her companion stand but was unable to do so and requested emergency assistance.

While en route, fire crews contacted Advanced Equine and Small Ruminant Veterinary Services, who were already nearby and promptly responded to aid the rescue effort.

After a thorough evaluation, the veterinarian recommended attempting a lift to give the horse a chance to recover.

Teams from Rescue 305, Large Animal Rescue 305, and Medic Engine 14 carefully positioned the horse using a glide board and rope system.

They then set up a large animal tripod and Becker Sling, employing an 8:1 rope mechanical advantage to safely lift the horse to her feet.

The animal remained in the harness briefly to restore circulation before being released.

She was able to stand and walk on her own, showing promising signs of recovery including good hydration, while closely monitored by the veterinarian and technician.

The horse’s owner, overwhelmed with relief, was deeply thankful to see her companion on her feet again.

This successful rescue highlights the strong coordination between San Bernardino County Fire and Advanced Equine and Small Ruminant Veterinary Services.
