Milwaukee, Wisconsin – The Central American Tapir Iibu at the Milwaukee County Zoo actively participates in his own health care. His animal care team discovered that when they scratch his back leg, Iibu moves to a sitting position.
When they scratch his inside rear leg, he lays down. This allows the care team to perform various health checks while Iibu is awake. The team can take blood pressure, conduct radiographs, draw blood, and do foot work in this position.
